At 75 mm you can stand it against a piece held in the vise without moving anything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eHow to actually read it\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePut the stock against the reference face and the blade against the face you are checking, then hold both up to a light. You are not looking at the square. You are looking at the gap. A square edge shows no light along the whole blade. A gap at the tip means the face leans out; a gap at the root means it leans in. This is more sensitive than any scale - a hundredth of a millimetre of gap is visible as a line of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhere it stops\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a fixed square. It checks ninety degrees and nothing else. It does not measure angles, it has no adjustable head, and it is not a protractor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is also a reference, and references get ruined by being used as tools. Do not tap it, do not use the blade as a straightedge to cut against, and do not drop it. A square that has been knocked out of true still looks perfectly square, and it will quietly make everything you check with it wrong.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGraduations are marked on the blade.
