On small work - a tool, a fixture, a part you will need to identify in a drawer in a year - 3 mm reads at arm's length and still fits across a face 10 mm wide.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eHow to strike one\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBack the work with something solid. A part supported only at the edges will dish under the blow and you get a bent part with a shallow character in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne firm hit, not three taps. Three taps move the punch slightly between each one and you get a doubled, fuzzy character. Set the punch, hold it square, hit it once.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWork right to left if you are stamping a word, or mark your spacing first. Everyone crowds the last letter the first time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhere it stops\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese displace metal. Stamping raises a burr around the character and, on thin stock, leaves a visible bulge on the back face. That is physics, not a defect. On anything under about 1 mm thick, expect to see it from both sides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey are hardened tool steel, so they mark steel, brass, aluminium, copper and plastic.
