micrometer-depth-stop
Micro-feed kit with micrometer scale

A drill press quill goes down as far as your hand pushes it. That is fine once. It is not fine forty times, when every hole has to stop at the same depth.

This is the part that decides instead of your hand. A micrometer head on an L-shaped bracket, with a plunger underneath that the quill comes down onto. You wind the thimble to set where it stops.

What comes in the kit

Micrometer head with its bracket and plunger

A stepped cone pulley, seven grooves, cut for a round belt

One socket head screw

A set of hex keys, short ones and long ball-end ones

The pulley is the part people skip over in the photographs. A stepped pulley is how a belt machine changes speed - move the belt to a different groove and the spindle turns faster or slower. Our press runs a round belt, so the groove profile looks right, and that is as far as we will go until one is in front of us.

How it mounts

The maker shows one small photograph of it fitted, and it answers a question we had wrong. The bracket does not clamp around the column. It lies flat along the top of the head casting and bolts down, with the micrometer at the outer end and the plunger reaching down to meet the quill.

Which means the thing that decides whether it fits your machine is the bolt holes in the top of your head, not the diameter of your column. We have not yet checked ours against it. A sample is on its way and this paragraph gets rewritten from the bench, not from a photograph.

What the maker publishes, and what we are leaving out

The maker lists the material as an aluminium-copper alloy. Beyond that, the supplier's description is not about this part - it is a general article about micro-feed systems, the kind with headings like "common micro-feed structure types". The figure of 0.01 mm appears there with the word usually in front of it, describing micro-feed systems in general.

So it is not a specification, and we are not printing it as one. The thimble is graduated and we can see the numbers on it. What one division actually moves the quill is something we will measure and print, not copy across.

Honest limits

We have not fitted one. Not the micrometer, not the pulley. Everything on this page is read off the supplier's own photographs.

We cannot promise it fits your machine. Nobody publishes the bolt pattern on these heads, ours included, and we are not going to guess. If you buy it and it does not fit, send it back and we pay the postage.

A depth stop repeats a depth. It does not make the spindle stiffer or the hole rounder. If your holes wander, the problem is somewhere else.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0760/5826/3743/files/S240ab2dcb32840458be9a42b1a8551c4j.webp?v=1789952724
