Then you put a vise on the table, or a stage under the vise, and the head is already near the top of its travel with nothing left to raise.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a longer one. 300 mm instead of the 165 mm ours came with, so there is another 135 mm of column to move the head up.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe material matters here\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003e45 carbon steel, high-frequency quenched and hardened, then chrome plated. That is what a column is supposed to be. A plain stainless rod of the same diameter is cheaper and looks identical, but it is soft - the split clamps that hold the head will dent it, and a dented column no longer slides square. We looked at the stainless version and did not stock it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eTwo sizes, and they are not interchangeable\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eMeasure the bare column on your machine before ordering. Ours is 13 mm. The heavier machines in this class are 16 mm. Nothing adapts one to the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eFitting it\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe column is not pressed in. It is held by a split clamp at the base and another in the head, so both come loose with a hex key and the old column slides out. Keep the old one - it is the right length when you want the machine compact again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eHonest limits\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eWe have not fitted one ourselves yet.\u003c\/strong\u003e We measured our own column at 13 mm across and 165 mm long, rule against the bare rod, and this is the matching diameter in a longer length. The fitting itself we will photograph once our sample is on the bench in early October.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eA longer column bends more. That is not a defect, it is how a cantilever works: the higher you set the head, the more a side load moves it. For drilling straight down it is fine.
