That third one is why this caliper and not a cheaper one. If your stock, your bits and your hardware are in sixteenths and sixty-fourths, reading a decimal and converting in your head is where errors get in. This one prints 3\/32 on the screen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFour measurements, one tool\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOutside, on the big jaws. Inside, on the small upper jaws. Depth, on the rod that extends out of the tail. Step, on the flat at the back of the beam. Most people use the first one and never learn the other three, and the depth rod is the one that actually tells you whether your hole went as deep as you meant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eZero anywhere. Close the jaws and press zero for absolute measurement, or zero it on a part and read the difference directly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhere it stops\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eResolution is not accuracy. The display shows 0.01 mm; what the instrument can actually repeat on a real part is coarser than that, and the last digit will flicker. Read it as hundredths that move, not hundredths you can trust individually. For bench work that is plenty. For setting up a grinder it is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt runs on one coin cell. Digital calipers drain a battery even switched off if you leave them closed and stored with pressure on the jaws - pop the cell out if it is going in a drawer for months.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDo not use the jaws as a scriber or a depth stop, and do not drop it. A caliper that has been dropped on the beam is scrap, and it will not tell you it is scrap.
