You are heating the joint through the braid. The moment the solder melts it climbs into the copper and the braid darkens. Lift both together. Loaded braid does not wick.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhere it stops\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBraid takes heat. It is a heatsink sitting on the pad, so the iron has to be hot enough and big enough to get through it. On a fine pad with a small tip you can end up holding heat on a pad for several seconds, and pads lift. Wider braid is worse for this, which is why 2.5 mm rather than 4.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt will not clear a plated through-hole completely. That is fine for what it does - it holds boards, which weigh nothing - but do not clamp anything heavy in it and do not expect it to take a side load.
